The Beatitudes - Love Your Enemies - Matthew 5:43-48
This sermon explores what it means to love our neighbours and enemies. We're confronted with Jesus' revolutionary teaching that goes beyond the surface-level interpretations of the law that had become commonplace in his time. The sermon unpacks how the common teaching of the day had twisted 'love your neighbour as yourself' from Leviticus 19 into 'love your neighbour and hate your enemy,' dropping the high standard and adding permission for hatred. Jesus resets this completely, calling us to a love that extends even to those who persecute us. The Good Samaritan story becomes our template — showing that our neighbour isn't just someone who looks like us or agrees with us, but anyone in need of mercy standing before us.
